Hard Rules by Lisa Renee Jones (Dirty Money #1) Book Review

Lets start with what my mind is instantly think right now as you read this… Because LEGITIMATELY, I JUST finished reading this book and I need to rant all about it! HOLY GUACAMOLE! Lisa Renee Jones has yet again knocked my mind out of the park with Hard Rules, the first book of the series. Wow! Just…

Blur: Wall Street meets Sons of Anarchy in the smoldering, scorching first novel in the explosively sexy new Dirty Money series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones.

How bad do you want it?

The only man within the Brandon empire with a moral compass, Shane Brandon is ready to take his family’s business dealings legitimate. His reckless and ruthless brother, Derek wants to keep Brandon Enterprises cemented in lies, deceit, and corruption. But the harder Shane fights to pull the company back into the light, the darker he has to become. Then he meets Emily Stevens, a woman who not only stirs a voracious sexual need in him, but becomes the only thing anchoring him between good and evil.

Emily is consumed by Shane, pushed sexually in ways she never dreamed of, falling deeper into the all-encompassing passion that is this man. She trusts him. He trusts her, but therein lies the danger. Emily has a secret, the very thing that brought her to him in the first place, and that secret that could that destroy them both.

WARNING: Spoiler Free Area

Honestly, where do I start with this book?! Oh, yeah I know where! The first time I read that Lisa was dropping yet again another title! That was back in March, and she had also dropped the blur and cover and I instantly fell in love when I read “Wall Street” and “Sons of Anarchy.” It consumed you with thoughts of hot, steamy, mystery, and dark pasts from the main characters. And guess who was right to assume that?

That’s right! ME! 😏

So let’s continue with the story review…

This story is one of a kind, which is something refreshing to read instead of reading cliché stories about bad ass billionaire lawyers. Shane, the main male protagonist in the story, has a past that is somewhat revealed while you read his conversation dialogues with Emily, the main male protagonist of the story. And just like Shane, Emily also has a past that is absolutely NOT revealed (not even a tiny pinch) in the story. THIS is the reason why I adore this story, because for ONCE it is the female protagonist who has that dark, intense, and mysterious past that we want so EAGERLY to know about.

What about the steamy scenes you want to know? Well… clears throat lets just say, that these scenes are just… BA-YUUUMMM!!

(Honestly I don’t know what words are flowing out of my typing right now…)

No, but seriously, their “love making” is simply so detailed, which for the reader is very pleasant ❤

Lisa’s writing has this specific tone to it that radiates from her stories right from the page. It’s this sense of formality and casualty mixed in one. Which is an ironic combination, but still able to be felt. I really love the addition she did of the mention of Confucius:

A tie can speak a million words.

What is surprisingly touching and unique in its own way, is the small quotes Lisa adds at the beginning of each chapter. It’s like she is adding a tone to her chapters with those endearing phrases, and it’s also as if she is adding a chapter title to it with the quotes by giving a hint to the reader what is to come from the chapter but still not give anything away.

Let me just talk about the ending though… JUST WHAT IN THE WORLD IS LISA TRYING TO DO TO MY HEART AND MIND?!! Is she trying to kill me and make me have yet again another book hangover (I just recently had one from Beneath Him by Komal Kant) all over again? I NEED THE SECOND BOOK NOW! But no!!! We have to wait until February to get the second installment of this series- Damaged Control.

From the title I can already tell that it will be explosive. And from the commends of Goodreads, there will be four books in this series. Bad Deeds (#3) and End Game (#4)- still not news or blurs about whether those last two will be part of the story between Shane and Emily.

crosses fingers they are

But seriously, I know it’s just for the increase of dramatic sense to the story, but what the heck was Emily thinking? Not telling the man she is slowly falling for all about the real her… Is Emily even her real name? UGHH! I LOVE IT THOUGH!

At the end of the day, this book has out beat the mark of perfection in every sense.

Goodreads Rate: FIVE STARS (wishing it where TEN but oh well…)
